Promotion and Tenure Guidelines

Our people are our most valuable resource. Supporting faculty members and acknowledging achievements are priorities for nurturing career-long professional development. Tenure and promotion are important to this support and acknowledgement.

Promotion in rank is an acknowledgment of excellence. Tenure is a long-term investment in the sustained contributions of the faculty member. Both are a reflection of cumulative contribution to the mission of IANR and the university.

Deadlines:

Departments, schools, and other units establish deadlines for when tenure and/or promotion materials are due for peer review, committee, and supervisor consideration.

After unit-level consideration, unit leaders must ensure that files for tenure and/or promotion are submitted via Sharepoint to the IANR Vice Chancellor's Office by November 15.

Documentation Request

The IANR Documentation Request (PDF) outlines the materials to be included in every promotion and tenure file.

Special Circumstances

Personal circumstances may prevent a faculty member in a tenure-leading position from performing at the level that is necessary to reach the high expectations of tenure within the timeframe of the probationary period. In such cases, an extension in the tenure clock may be appropriate.
