Dr. Joe Luck
Dr. Joe Luck joined the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in April 2012 and currently serves as Professor and Interim Department Head. He also serves as Associate Director of the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center (ENREEC), a position he has held since 2021.
Dr. Luck’s faculty responsibilities have included developing research and Extension programs focused on the application of precision agriculture technologies in crop production, as well as teaching courses in site-specific crop management and agricultural technologies. Much of this work has been conducted in collaboration with the Nebraska Extension On-Farm Research Network, through which his team has completed more than 200 on-farm research projects with cooperating producers since 2014. His research team also developed an innovative nitrogen management decision-support tool that has been commercialized and is currently deployed on more than 100,000 acres annually.
Dr. Luck has served as lead PI on externally funded research projects totaling more than $7.7 million from federal and local agencies, commodity groups, and industry partners, and has contributed to an additional $17 million in funded projects as a co-PI. Since 2014, twenty graduate students have completed their graduate studies under his direction. He has authored or co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles (four of which have earned ASABE superior paper awards) along with 40 conference proceedings and has delivered more than 300 research and Extension presentations. Dr. Luck grew up on a family farm in western Kentucky and received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Manoj Karkee
Dr. Manoj Karkee is the Norman R. and Sharon R. Scott Professor in the Biological and Environmental Engineering Department at Cornell University. Prior to joining Cornell, he was the director and professor at the Center for Precision and Automated Agricultural Systems at Washington State University. He received his PhD in Agricultural Engineering and Human Computer Interaction from Iowa State University. Dr. Karkee leads a strong research program in the area of sensing, AI, machine vision, and robotics for agricultural applications, and has published widely in journals such as Information Fusion and Computers and Electronics in Agriculture. He has also been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences and universities. Dr. Karkee is currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief for Computers and Electronics in Agriculture, Associate Editor of the Journal of the ASABE, and Vice-Chair of the Technical Program Committee of the ASABE Annual International Meeting. In the past, Dr. Karkee served as the elected chair of CIGR (International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering) Section III – Plant Production, and IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Technical Committee 8.1 – Control in Agriculture. Dr. Karkee was awarded the ‘2020 Rain Bird Engineering Concept of the Year Award’ by ASABE, and was recognized as the ‘2019 Pioneer in Artificial Intelligence and IoT’ by Connected World magazine. In addition, he has recently been recognized with the ‘Best Researcher of the Year’ award by the Asian Association of Agricultural Engineers (AAAE).
